Short bio:

Norma Fuentes-Mayorga is an Associate Professor of Sociology, and Director of the Latin American and Latina/o Studies Program at the City College of New York (CUNY). She received her PhD from Columbia University, New York, in 2005. Since then she has documented the growing U.S. immigration of Latina women from the Dominican Republic and Mexico, with a special focus on the mobility life chances of Afro-Caribbean and Indigenous women in New York City. This is the focus of her recent book publication, From Homemakers, To Breadwinners, To Community Leaders: Migrating Women, Class, and Color (Rutgers University Press, 2023). She is currently working on a cross-national study that explores the role of education, technology, and racial identity in the social mobility and labor market integration of Dominican and Moroccan girls in the cities of Amsterdam and New York. The findings will inform the writing of a second book manuscript, tentatively titled, “From Second Sex to Model Minorities: Immigrant Mothers and the Social Mobility of Daughters in Europe and the US.” Dr. Fuentes-Mayorga’s work has been published in international journals in the U.S., Europe, and Latin America. She has been a Visiting Fellow at Amsterdam University, Princeton University, New York University, and currently is a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the City University of New York’s Advanced Research Collaborative (ARC).
